A handy little piece of equipment to own is the spring balance. 

You will often see fisherman dangling their prize catch from their Spring Balance to confirm the weight of the "monster".  I like to use it to weigh packs, tents and various other gear.  Comes in handy when you are trying to limit the weight in a pack for kids to carry.
